The History of Club Car® Vehicles

If you’ve seen a golf course, you’ve undoubtedly seen a Club Car® cruising over the grass, transporting drivers and their clubs from hole to hole. Club Car® has been designing and manufacturing golf carts and utility vehicles for the American market from their headquarters in Augusta, Georgia, since 1962. Richmond Equipment of Richmond, Texas, is a proud Club Car® dealer, so we’ve provided a little information on the history of this company and their products.

Early Years

Large 18-hole golf courses have existed in the United States since 1892, with the creation of the Downers Grove, Illinois course on a former sheep farm. Bill Stevens of Augusta purchased the Landreath Machine company from its Houston, Texas, owners and turned it into Club Car®. The company made golf course transit much simpler and faster in 1960 by creating the first golf cart with a steering wheel. This cart was popular with golfing celebrities, and in 1962, Club Car® took off, with Bill and his son driving their small golf cart from Augusta to the 1962 PGA show in Dunedin, Florida, over six days. The carts continued to see improvements, from roofs to extra seating in the back to storage compartments, making it even easier for golfers to play their favorite game.

Utility Terrain Vehicles

During the 1980s, Club Car® expanded their repertoire from golf carts to utility vehicles made for more rugged journeys and tasks. Their first utility vehicles were simply modified golf carts for use as golf course maintenance vehicles, with cargo boxes welded onto the back. The Carryall II vehicle came out in 1985 as a business solution for college campus and manufacturing transport needs. The Carryall series continued into the 1990s and 2000s with the 2004 release of the Carryall 295 marking Club Car's foray into creating four-wheel-drive utility vehicles. The Carryall was reintroduced in 2014 with increased efficiency and better hauling capacity, with vehicles made to haul cargo and transport passengers on resorts, large venues and business campuses. In 2010, Club Car® released their first zero-emissions low-speed vehicle to coincide with Earth Day.
