Scouting

Exploring your hunting ground is vital in planning out your hunt, and a UTV makes that simple. Cruise around the woods, covering lots of ground in comfort, to get the lay of the land and how it’s used by your potential game.

Gear Up

A UTV fresh off the lot might have everything you need, but it might not. Make sure yours has the following before you head out:

  • A gun scabbard to keep your weapon and scope protected and secure during your rides.
  • A winch to help your UTV out of any sticky situations, or to help you pull game out of the brush for dressing.
  • A dedicated GPS to help you avoid getting lost and note key spots you want to return to—your phone GPS might not be reliable in the middle of nowhere, and you’ll want to avoid running down your battery.

Quiet Down

You might be thinking, “None of this is helpful if my engine scares off my prey!” You’re absolutely right, and while you can’t make it perfectly silent, there are a couple ways to cut down on the noise pollution, reducing the chances of alerting your game to your presence.

Step one is making sure your UTV is in good shape. Leaky exhaust systems can make whistling noises, dirty braking components can cause vibrations or grinding, dirty wheel bearings can screech, and so on. Do a pre-ride inspection to make sure everything is relatively clean and operational before you head out.

There are some modifications you can make as well. Removing or securing any loose metal can prevent excess rattling noises, and soundproofing material like rubber can help reduce noise further. There are also a number of aftermarket accessories that you can add on, such as upgrades that silence or reduce the sound of your exhaust.
